Director of Conservation

Directs policy recommendations and legal defense strategies to protect manatees and their habitat for Save the Manatee Club (SMC), a nonprofit organization based in Maitland, Florida. Will identify manatee protection measures, lead citizen advocacy efforts, partner with other organizations/agencies, represent SMC at meetings and working groups, and work to ensure strong manatee and habitat protection at the local, state, and federal levels. Will prioritize issues for SMC, draft comments on various conservation and management plans, and advise on SMC’s research participation. Will also serve as contact for international conservation and education projects involving manatees. Responsible for writing conservation and education articles as well serving as a media spokesperson. Knowledge of manatee natural history, conservation efforts, and legal protection is desired as well as experience in advocacy and project management. Must be an effective communicator who works well with others, can build coalitions, and has strong writing and computer skills. Must be able to travel, work both independently and collaboratively, and meet deadlines. The position reports to the Executive Director. Salary commensurate with background and experience.
