Manatee "Hot Spots" in Florida
Brevard County: The Banana River, also the USFWS has designated the Canaveral Barge Canal, between the ICW and the locks, and all of Sykes Creek a slow speed manatee refuge. These zones are posted and are being enforced.
Broward County: The ICW and the inlet areas, the Dania Cutoff Canal and the New River
Charlotte County: The Peace River, Charlotte Harbor, Turtle Bay, and the southern portion of Lemon Bay
Citrus County: All of Kings Bay and the Crystal and Homosassa Rivers
Collier County: Rookery, Naples, and Chokoloskee Bays and the Everglades City area; the Marco Island area, Wiggins Pass, and Henderson Creek
Dade County: Biscayne Bay and the Coral Gables Waterway, the Miami, Little and Oleta Rivers, and the Sky Lakes and Blue Lagoon
Duval County: The entire St. John’s River system, with emphasis on the tributaries such as Julington Creek and the shorelines
Hillsborough County: The downtown area, the Alafia River and the Little Manatee River
Indian River County: Primarily the Jungle Trail Narrows, around the Sebastian Inlet and the Sebastian River
Lee County: The Caloosahatchee River, Matlacha Pass, Estero Bay, Pine Island Sound and the vicinity of Sanibel Island and the Bokeelia Point area
Manatee County: Terra Ceia Bay and the Manatee and Braden Rivers
Monroe County: The Florida Bay side of the Upper Keys and the canal systems located in Key Largo and also Whitewater Bay in the Everglades
Palm Beach County: The Loxahatchee River, Jupiter Sound, Lake Worth Creek and the Intracoastal Waterway, especially in the area around Boca Raton
Pinellas County: The Ft. Desoto and Clearwater Harbor
Sarasota County: Lemon Bay, the Little Sarasota Bay, Roberts Bay, and the Myakka River
St. Lucie and Martin: The north and south forks of the St. Lucie River and the St. Lucie Inlet area, including the Intracoastal Waterway, Manatee Pocket and the Crossroads
Volusia: Ponce Inlet, and the Halifax River system including the Tomoka River, the Oak Hill area and the St. John’s River system
