SMC Co-Chair Presents "Granny D" with
Manatee Adoption

(l-r) SMC Board of Directors Co-Chair Helen Spivey and Doris "Granny D" Haddock.

Helen Spivey, Co-Chair of the Board of Directors of Save the Manatee Club, recently presented Doris “Granny D” Haddock with a complimentary manatee adoption for Rosie, one of the most popular manatees at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park. Spivey also presented Granny D with the book I’m a Manatee by actor John Lithgow. Lithgow is also an adoptive parent of Rosie the manatee.

In 1999, at the age of 89, Granny D began a walk in Pasadena, California, covering 10 miles per day for 14 months and arriving in Washington, D.C. on February 29, 2000. By the time she had completed her journey, she had walked approximately 3,200 miles! In October of 2003, she launched a voter registration effort directed at America’s working women. She plans on visiting 36 states before the November election, urging women to vote in greater numbers. Granny D has also written and published a book titled Granny D: Walking Across America in my 90th Year.
