This holiday season, give the gift that captures hearts around the world. A manatee adoption from Save the Manatee Club is a caring “win-win-win” gift where endangered manatees, the person who adopts them, and the person who receives gift adoptions, all benefit.
In Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, Sondra Murphy adopted Howie from the Club’s Blue Spring State Park adoption program for her mother last Christmas. “My mom wasn’t expecting it at all,” said Sondra, a director at a public library on Martha’s Vineyard. “I knew she would like it – we both love manatees – but I didn’t think she would be as excited as she was! We looked through the adoption packet right then and there, and with great pride she showed Howie’s adoption certificate to everyone in the room.”
An annual manatee adoption costs $25 and includes an adoption certificate, photo of a real Florida manatee, biography, a membership handbook filled with photos, facts, and information, and official newsletters throughout the year with updated reports on the manatees in the adoption program. See all the manatees up for adoption – Doc, Rocket, Ariel, Flash, and more on the Club’s website at savethemanatee.org/adoptees. And each new member who joins the Adopt-A-Manatee® program online for a $35 tax-deductible donation will also receive Save the Manatee Club’s Special Edition 35th Anniversary wall calendar for 2016 (in full color). Shipping is free within the United States.
Save the Manatee Club was created in 1981 by Jimmy Buffett, the renowned singer/songwriter, and former Florida Governor and U.S. Senator, Bob Graham, to raise public awareness about the numerous threats to endangered manatees and their aquatic habitat. The Club is an award-winning international nonprofit conservation organization dedicated to the long-term survival of the species. Save the Manatee Club educates; sponsors research and rescue, rehabilitation, and release efforts; supports land acquisition; promotes aquatic habitat protection; advocates for improved on-the-water protection measures, and supports education and conservation efforts in other countries.
“I have been following Save the Manatee Club for many years now,” said Sondra. “They do very important work. I enjoy their posts on Facebook and I love to follow along with their efforts. I really enjoy watching the Blue Spring State Park live feed on the Club’s webcams each winter at ManaTV.org to see how the manatees there are doing.”
