Manatee Sightings

Wayne Hartley manatee photo

Orange City , Florida: On February 12, 2013, Wayne Hartley, Save the Manatee Club's Manatee Specialist, took photos of Ann and her five-day-old calf. Note that Ann is quite round yet and still looks pregnant. (Photo © Save the Manatee Club)

Orange City, Florida: On that same day, Wayne also took some video of Ann and her young calf. Notice the calf's wrinkly tail! Ann's calf was the second newborn at Blue Spring in February. (47 sec.)

Patrick M. Rose manatee photo

Orange City, Florida: In early February, Patrick Rose, SMC's Executive Director, took this image of "U66," Georgia's adopted calf. In December, Georgia was spotted in the spring boil with the calf, who was apparently orphaned and suffering from cold stress. We are pleased that he is looking much healthier now. Orange City, Florida: See video taken in February 2013 by Wayne Hartley, Save the Manatee Club's Manatee Specialist, at Blue Spring State Park. The video features SMC adoptee Robin (in the background at the start and later with the USGS researcher) and Gator, a Blue Spring manatee who is easily recognized by the significant scars on his back. Manatees Axis and Bon Bon are also present. In addition, Wayne captures manatee research being done by the U.S. Geological Survey's Sirenia Project. (2 min. 28 sec.)

Barrie Dixon manatee photo

Orange City, Florida: Barrie Dixon, our SMC member from England, captured this synchronized swimming moment at Blue Spring State Park. Two manatees dive as another manatee glides underneath. (Photo © Barrie Dixon )

Orange City, Florida: Save the Manatee Club's webcams capture some sweet video of a calf nursing from its mother and other manatees gathered at Blue Spring State Park in December. The mom is U57 and her calf. Calista, with a white triangle scar, is featured near the beginning. The huge manatee with scars on her back is Donna, and the manatee in the background with white scarring on the right tail edge is Pogo. Don't miss the video at around 3:57 when "Big Blue," the park's resident 14-foot-long alligator, comes to join the group. Not to worry though. Manatees are not usually prey for alligators. (10 min. 29 sec.)

Jeanette Dixon manatee photo

Orange City, Florida: Not to be outdone by Barrie, wife Jeanette Dixon snapped a shot of a manatee just as it surfaced to breathe. This photo was also taken at Blue Spring State Park. (Photo © Jeanette Dixon )

Orange City, Florida: This video from the webcams at Blue Spring State Park documents a group of manatees as they frolic in the warm waters of the refuge and are then joined by others. Watch at :20 when three of the manatees surface to breathe together. The object of the frolic is Lily, an SMC adoptee. The manatee with the many scars is Africa. The third manatee at the start of the video is a juvenile. Then Luke joins, followed by Potter. (2 min.)

Delaware: "I'm proud to be profiling my new Delaware environmental Marine Education Research & Rehabilitation tag," said member Judy Dierkes. "The DMV sent me two special plates.....guess I'm just one lucky Delaware sea cow!"

Michigan: "We are a downhill ski team called Team Manatee," wrote Linda Dionne. "We all love manatees!" (l-r) Dan Miller, Gary Dionne, Linda Dionne (with the manatee mascot), Eric Hammerstrom, and Ross Anthony at Marquette Mountain in Marquette, MI. (Photo courtesy Linda Dionne.)

Michigan: Unlike their Florida counterparts, Team Manatee must move pretty fast! They were B-League Champions in 2002, 2005, and 2010. The front of their jackets have an embroidered manatee with the words "Large slow moving mammal" and feature manatee pins. (Photo courtesy Linda Dionne.)
