Brevard County, Florida: Patricia Tierney sent this sweet photo of a mother manatee and calf taken right before Christmas 2009.
Orange City, Florida: Vuttiphong Rittisakdanon took these photos of a resting manatee and a manatee coming up to breathe during the Blue Spring Manatee Festival at the end of January 2010.
Crystal River, Florida: Stacy Dunn sent this photo of a relaxed manatee. "This was amazing to see," said Stacy. "This manatee was literally stretched out over two branches in Three Sisters Springs."
St. Petersburg, Florida: New thermal reflectance blankets in action that Save the Manatee Club received free from AFMInc and donated to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to use for manatee rescue and research.
FWC staff sent this photo with the following caption: Thanks for the blankets! "Prior to this, manatees were being covered with wetsuits and foam," says SMC Staff Biologist Artie Wong.
"The thermal blankets, which are typically used by hospitals to prevent hypothermia in humans, are a significant improvement and should be very useful in caring for cold-stressed manatees." (Photo courtesy FWC)
Brevard County, Florida: Patricia Tierney also sent this short video of the manatee mother and calf sighted near her dock. The mother manatee has obvious scars from a watercraft injury, but you'll love the glimpse of her tiny calf.
