X marks the spot at the Holiday Inn Superdome in historic New Orleans, where pirate enthusiasts from around the country will be gathering for “PyrateCon 2007,” April 19-22, sponsored by the International Pirate Society. They’ll be coming from far and wide – wearing eye-patches and uttering their best “arrrs”  –  a  motley crew of scallywags and buccaneers congregating for the first ever pirate-themed conference in “America’s Most Interesting City!”

The four-day weekend event has been planned to offer something to amuse and interest everyone who attends, from the serious nautical historian to the pirate movie fanatic. Funds raised will benefit Save the Manatee Club and N.P. Trist Middle School, which was devastated by Hurricane Katrina. “We want to make this a fun annual event, but we also want to give something back to the community and to a conservation organization whose efforts we support,” said Rudy Arceo, Director of PyrateCon 2007. On the agenda are authors, speakers, demonstrations, re-enactors, and numerous celebrities, including the “Talk Like a Pirate Day” guys, and cast members from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” movies.

The highlight of the weekend will be the Buccaneer’s Masquerade Ball at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville. Pirates in all their finery will march there from Jean Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, where they will be entertained by the Jolly Garogers and Beth Patterson. A costume contest will be part of the festivities, followed by pirate court and an awards ceremony.

The conference will also feature an interactive “Audience Participation” showing of “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” as well as a screening of the independent movie, “Pirates of the Great Salt Lake.”

“We believe PyrateCon 2007 will be a great time for all – a real memorable treasure that will please every pirate at heart,” said Arceo.
