Think cottonmouth snakes, alligators in unlikely places, and fish called mullet. Think warm tropical breezes and Jimmy Buffett, and what you have is a whole lot of Florida and fun to experience in the new family movie, Hoot, opening in theatres on May 5. Follow the thrilling and often hilarious adventures of three middle-school friends in Coconut Cove, Florida who are fiercely determined to save a population of endangered owls from land developers.

Filmed in south Florida, Hoot is based on Carl Hiaasen’s Newbery Honor-winning novel. He even makes an appearance in the movie as Felix the assistant, so watch for him! Wil Shriner is the director of the film adaption of Carl’s acclaimed book, and Frank Marshall and Walden Media produced it for New Line Cinema.

Back to Jimmy Buffett – just in case you haven’t already heard, Save the Manatee Club’s co-founder is one of the shining stars in the movie, playing the role of Mr. Ryan, a marine science teacher. Jimmy also provides some original music and he’s another one of the producers of Hoot.

Here’s an interesting Club factoid – many months back, we were asked to send over a variety of manatee items for possible use in the set design.

We’re hoping that people of all ages will appreciate the conservation message in Hoot: the importance of preserving wildlife. Whether it’s the burrowing owls or the gentle manatees, habitat is shrinking for many species of wildlife in Florida, and we need to be more aware of the serious problems that can result. The young heroes in the film demonstrate thoughtfulness and courage when they take a protective stand for a defenseless creature. Gather up family and friends to see this movie. At its heart, Hoot is a wonderful lesson for us all.
