On December 1, 2007, Logan Friedman and Marcus Daly, both fourth graders at St. Patricks Episcopal Day School hosted a booth at a charity event, called Gifts for Good. They decided to participate in the event in order to raise money for the Save the Manatee Club. They were one of over 20 booths, but only one of a small few that were organized and run by kids. They were able to raise $640 for the Save the Manatee Club over the five hours that they managed the booth. They spent their time telling visitors about the importance of protecting the manatees and of the work that the Save the Manatee Club does to lobby the state of Florida to protect the endangered species. They offered gifts to the visitors in exchange for their donations, including a manatee keychain, christmas ornament, or stuffed animal. Because the gifts were paid for by the Friedman and Daly families, all of the proceeds that the children collected at the event were donated directly to the Save the Manatee Club for the benefit of the charity.
Logan and Marcus have been interested in the manatee over the past year as they have learned about the endangered species from their trips to Florida and from their teachers. To top off this tremendous experience for Logan, over the Christmas holiday last week, Logan visited his grandparents in Florida and was very lucky to see a manatee swimming in the Inner-Coastal just north of Jupiter, Florida. During his boating trip, Logan was pleased to see all of the boaters abiding by the strict speed limits that have been established for the protection of the manatee.
Overall, this event was a great experience for the children, but also for all of the charities that benefited from the visitors' generosity. Logan and Marcus look forward to continuing their sponsorship and support for the Save the Manatee Club through their membership in the Club's adopt-a-manatee program and by continuing their efforts to educate other kids at St. Patricks about the importance of protecting such a wonderful endangered species.
