On your mark, get set, go! On May 19th, 2012, runners and walkers enjoyed exceptional weather and a picturesque lakefront course, as they participated in the L’Anse Creuse High School 9th Annual Save the Manatee 5K Run and 2 Mile Walk.

The event, held in Harrison Township, Michigan, has quickly become a favorite race of many runners and walkers, and this year’s event was the most successful with over 1,000 people supporting Save the Manatee Club and the conservation work they do.

New this year was the Mini Manatee Mile, with over 100 participants, ranging from ages 4 to 87. Serious and recreational runners, as well as parents pushing baby strollers, enjoyed the music, a variety of raffle prizes, a children’s clown, a canine corner, and students wearing manatee costumes that entertained the crowd.

This is a very family friendly event and I’m very proud of how popular this race has become. I exceeded this year’s goal of 1,000 participants, and I look forward to making it an even better event next year. I couldn’t have done this without the help of Save the Manatee Club. L’Anse Creuse High School was proud to present the Club with a $13,500 donation. This brings our nine-year total to $69,500!

Hope to see everyone next year on Saturday, May 18th, 2013! For more information and early registration for next year’s race, visit www.savethemanatee5k.com, or contact me directly at larigiri1@hotmail.com.
