Manatee Protection Tips for Boaters:
Boating Safety Classes

In October 1996, the Florida Boater Education Law went into effect. The law requires that persons 16 years of age and younger must take a boater education course. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC), any National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved course is approved under the Florida Boater Education Law. Coast Guard Auxiliary or Power Squadron boating safety classes are NASBLA approved and are offered throughout the state of Florida.
  • To find a Coast Guard Auxiliary boating safety class in your area, go to www.cgaux.org.

  • Information about Power Squadron boating safety courses can be obtained by calling 1-888-FOR-USPS or access a schedule of courses online at http://www.usps.org.

  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWCC) also offers a free online “How to Boat Smart - Florida ” boating safety course. The online course satisfies the requirements of the Florida Boater Education Law and is free (there is a $29.50 one-time fee for a permanent Florida Boating Safety Education I.D. Card once you pass the exam). For more information, see http://www.boat-ed.com/fl/fl_internet.htm.

  • Boat U.S. Foundation has a general boating course, which covers a broad range of topics that are appropriate for powerboats and sailors. You will receive a certificate upon a successful completion of this NASBLA approved course. Call 1-800-336-BOAT or go to http://www.boatus.org/onlinecourse
