In 2010, Sarasota County and the City of Northport purchased Warm Mineral Springs from a private owner. Now, the county and city are collecting input regarding the future of Warm Mineral Springs. Please fill out an online survey to provide your input, asking that manatees receive enhanced access to warm water and that the future site include manatee educational opportunities.

Warm Mineral Springs is the only spring in southwest Florida accessible to manatees and used as winter warm water habitat. Manatees do not have access to the boil itself, but they receive warm water flow through Salt Creek. This is an important site for manatees and with the springs property and several adjacent parcels now in public ownership through Sarasota County and the City of Northport, this is an important and exciting time to make sure that the needs of manatees are considered during the planning phase to set the course for the future of Warm Mineral Springs. Additionally, we believe that manatee and springs ecology education should be integrated into future plans for Warm Mineral Springs.

The online survey can be accessed at http://www.scgov.net/NewsStories/news9.asp and must be completed before 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17th.

Please fill out the online survey to let county and city leaders know that your #1 priority for Warm Mineral Springs is protection of manatees and their habitat.

Thanks for taking action!

Sincerely,

Katie Tripp, Ph.D.
