Researching
Manatees in West Africa
Biologist Lucy Keith had worked
with manatees in Florida and Central America for almost 10 years when she heard from a
colleague working in central West Africa that he often saw manatees as he boated through
lagoons. She knew manatees are considered rare everywhere they occur in Africa, so she

Meet Deep
Dent
Deep Dent is a male manatee and
first appeared at the warm waters of Blue Spring State Park in the winter of 1979. We
don't know where he wintered before that time, but we do know he must
have liked what he saw, because Deep Dent has come back to Blue Spring many winters since
